Glimpse of Enchantment by Josephine Linggar
Exhibition is opened to public from 3 - 8 October 2008 Josephine Linggar paints beautiful women. Vulnerable and sensuous, yet elegant and enchanting, Josephine’s portraits of Indonesian maidens captivate with their beauty and serenity. Josephine is unafraid to portray a woman’s beauty and physical assets from a feminine point of view. They are neither exaggerated nor deliberately suppressed. With a formidable technique that is tempered by sensitivity, she brings to life facial expressions, body contours and clothing. Josephine portrays her maidens in a dual style. Some in languid poses, draped in sarongs, rendered in sepia tones. A brightly-colored flower or piece of clothing, adds color and contrast to the painting. Others are more elaborately styled: clothed in traditional Balinese bridal or Dance costumes and headdress, arrayed with patterns and textures, intricately crafted into each image. In Jakarta, where Josephine lives and works from her gallery, she is held as an artist of distinction. One of her paintings forms part of the Presidential Palace Collection of the Republic of Indonesia. She was chosen by the Palace for a special commission to paint the late Madam Tien Soeharto. Josephine also received a commission to paint former Indonesian president, Mrs Megawati Soekarno Putri, when she was Vice- President in 2001. Josephine has held 6 solo exhibitions in Switzerland, USA, Singapore and Indonesia and participated in many group exhibitions. Some of her paintings have been sold at Auctions by Larasati Auctioneers and Borobudur Auctions in Jakarta. To date, more than 500 of Josephine’s paintings have been collected by art lovers in Indonesia and overseas since she first started exhibiting in 1994. Following her highly successful first solo in 2001, this is Josephine’s 2nd solo exhibition in Singapore.
