Valbelle, Myth of Fiction? by Gilles Massot

Valbelle, Myth or Fiction? traces the origins of the photographic act to a specific moment in the history of 18th century France.
Gilles Massot combines the architectural legacy of Omer de Valbelle, a flamboyant aristocrat from Provence and the literary work of ‘Tipaigne de la Roche’, a mysterious writer from Normandy, to his own research and practice on the nature of Photography. The resulting fiction proposes to read Photography as a myth and uncovers an unusual perspective on how the idea of a pictorial frozen moment in time took shape.

Valbelle, Myth or Fiction? begins at the Alliance Française de Singapore from 12 – 22 January 2007, and continues at Plastique Kinetic Worms from 25 January – 16 February 2007. The installation featured in Part II will be enhanced with a soundtrack specifically created for this exhibition by sound artist Damien Lock. This exhibition is part of Le Siècle des Lumiéres (The Age of Enlightenment) celebrating the gems of the 18th century, organised by the Alliance Française de Singapour from 9th – 30th January 2007.
