Kypros - Visions & Voices by Gudrun SCHMIDT

“…The eternity of sea and stone against the decay of an industrial area, the juxtaposition of different rhythms and textures and the splendid colours of rust and copper…”
- Gudrun Schmidt
Gudrun Schmidt’s second solo exhibition in Singapore, Kypros – Visions & Voices showcases abstract works from late 2005 to early 2006. The Kypros paintings are the centrepiece of this exhibition; inspired by the controversial dialogue between industry and nature.
For Schmidt, inspiration happened within a precious moment on a deserted industrial site on a beach in Cyprus scattered with old railway relics from the long gone copper mining corporation on this copper rich island in the eastern Mediterranean. This instant led to an artistic translation of industrial remains against stone, pebbles and sea with the overarching impression of copper tones.

These paintings are multi-layered abstract works with a subtle luminosity and sheen derived from a range of underlying hues, and sometimes with integration of small collages.
