In Exile

Gilles Massot Tay Kay Chin

Exile is a state of mind. The body can be in one place and yet the mind can wander. Just as one can, through the power of imagination and memory, live in another sphere.

Photographers Gilles MASSOT and TAY Kay Chin have found themselves moving between the two extremes for their whole lives. Massot, who hails from France, is often more comfortable in his adopted home – Singapore. While Tay, who is a Singaporean, still has problems at times calling the lion city his home.

The question remains – where is home? Cultural roots remain an essential part of a person’s identity, a driving force in one’s interaction with the world. On a recent trip to France, Massot rediscovered his country of birth in a way he hadn’t experienced for a long time, while Tay continues to reflect on his origins.

How close is home?

In Exile is a visual dialogue between two citizens of the world who probably will continue to ask the same question years from now.
